Michigan Maple Block

Fun Facts

The Maple Tree

The maple tree can be easily identified by it characteristic three to five lobed leaf. It is also well known for it's "helicopter" seeds. Important commercial products include maple syrup and furniture (including butcher block). There are over 200 species of maple trees in the world most of them in the northern temperate zone of the United States, Canada and Europe. Sugar Maple or Hard Maple only grows naturally in a tight range from the western Great Lakes to Nova Scotia, Canada down through Pennsylvania and Ohio. Northern Hard Maple is the best wood for Butcher Block because of its density, hardness and tight grain structure. The further north a Maple tree grows the more dense or strong it generally becomes. Butcher Block was first known for its "tree"mendous strength. Today it is also valued for its good looks.

The Maple Leaf Rag

In 1899 Scott Joplin composed The Maple Leaf Rag which was extremely popular near the turn of the century.

About Maple Syrup

In the 1950s the U.S. Produced 80% of the worlds supply of Maple Syrup with Canada producing the remainder. 2001 figures show a flip flop in these numbers with the US producing 15% of world production and Canada producing 85%. In the United States Vermont led the nation with approximately 37 percent of the U.S. production. Maine, New York, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Connecticut also produce Maple Syrup. This coincides with the range of the Sugar Maple.

Pins and Alleys

Sugar Maple is the wood of choice for bowling pins and bowling alley lanes. For years bowling pin manufacturers have looked for a synthetic alternative but because of the unique sound quality of the ball striking solid maple all attempts at this have been failures.

It also is being used regularly for the shuffleboard tables you might see at your local watering hole. Bally Block Co. is currently manufacturing these game table tops.

Maple Bats

Maple has gained some popularity with Major League Baseball players. The strength and tight grain of the wood is said to give the ball more spring off the bat. Maple bats generally are slightly more expensive than the normal Northern White Ash bat. Durability increases with the strength of maple making the bats the cheaper choice in the long run. Personal taste and superstition also play a role in the continuing popularity of Ash bats.

Medicinal Matters

Native Americans used the inner bark of the Maple tree to make a tea to relieve coughs. Maple syrup is also believed to be a liver and kidney cleanser.

Edge Grain Construction

Butcher Block is sometimes referred to as Edge Grain Construction. It also is referred to as face glued. While furniture manufacturers for years have prized the "cathedraling" of face grain, butcher block was always edge grain construction. The reason for this is that by turning each lamination 90 degrees as it comes off the gang saw we take advantage of the strongest part of the wood. For years this was and still is very important to the food service and manufacturing industries due to the exceedingly high durability of the butcher block top. However over the years great appeal has grown for butcher block as a beautiful addition to the home. Perhaps for the tradition and history behind butcher block and perhaps because so much of our homes have become plastic many homeowners are looking for the warmth, honesty and character of butcher block.
